Insiders' perspectives on bilingualism
The students were deep into a lesson about French poet Guillaume Apollinaire when their teacher asked them to break into groups and discuss the poems. The official language in this Grade 12 classroom at Bishop Allen Academy in west Toronto is French, but without the teacher, whispered English floats through the air.
Those whispers will eventually take over, as 2006 census data from Statistics Canada indicates most people outside Quebec lose their bilingualism as they enter adulthood.
Outside Quebec, bilingualism continued to decrease among anglophones between the ages of 15 and 19 – the age of high-school students – and then declines even further as they grow older.
In 1996, 16.3 per cent of anglophones outside Quebec in that age group said they were bilingual, compared with 13 per cent in 2006. More>>
